CaptainLance9's Luminary Merc Bot hands the killing to a mercenary you hire for good. The Scion's Luminary ascendancy lets you keep one permanently, and you make it stronger with Flame Link, your auras and your buffs, then spend most of your time charging around while it fights. He calls the result very tanky and relaxed to play, and he presents it as a league starter.
Mercenaries came back in 3.29, and CaptainLance9 points out that some of their behaviour could only be tested once the league was live, so he keeps revising the guide. Expect your damage to rest mainly on the mercenary you end up with: a good one with strong skills and supports makes an enormous difference.
The variants follow the tabs of his page. RF Swap is the campaign stage, where Righteous Fire carries you until the mercenary can. Day1 to Day5/6 take your own gear from the first maps to a Mageblood, and ArmourStackGear is your half of his late armour-stacking setup. The last five tabs dress someone else: CampaignMerc, ManyShotGear, ArmourStackMerc and Kineticist are gear sets for the mercenary, and AnimateGuardian is the gear for your Animate Guardian, so those tabs leave the passive tree empty.
